Being Prepared for Severe Weather

When you look out the window to see the trees bending sideways and a small dog flies by, no, it’s not Oz, but you should probably check the local weather network. Severe storms, including tornados, happen quickly and can be extremely devastating as our area learned on July 31, 1987. Here are a few basic facts you should arm yourself with:

• There IS a difference between weather “Watch” and a weather “Warning”. Watch means conditions are favorable for the weather to occur…Warning means it is imminent or already occurring in the area.
• Never sit and wait for the TV info to change from “watch” to warning” to take action. If you feel threatened, take immediate action in seeking a safe spot or securing the area.
• Bring vehicles into the garage if possible as large hail can cause extreme damage. Same with outdoor plants.
• Know what to look for. A tornado usually brings warning signs such as large hail, a dark greenish sky and a continuous “roaring” similar to a freight train. Also be wary if there are very calm and quiet conditions immediately after a thunderstorm. These are all danger signs and should be taken seriously.
• Head to a safe spot, preferably a basement. If there is no basement, go to a space away from outside walls such as a closet or bathroom. Stay away from windows, as well as anything that can hit you such as bookcases and chairs.
• You should always have an emergency care kit prepared and near your safety spot. This should include first aid supplies, a flashlight, batteries as well as water and food to last at least 72 hours as well a means of communication if possible.
• *** If you are not at home, NEVER try to outrun a storm. If you are in the open, get down low and cover your head. If you are in your car, stay in it. Duck down and keep your seatbelt on. Cover yourself with a blanket if there is one in the vehicle. Do not try hiding under an overpass or bridge.

While we are very fortunate that in the Edmonton area we do not typically see more than a Watch status, all it takes is a moment, and you need to be educated and prepared for it. Stay safe friends!!
