Top 3 Misconceptions about Real Estate Agents - #1

I started the topic of this blog back in July with Misconception #3, got to #2 in August... and I'm sure you've been waiting with bated breath for the #1 misconception about real estate agents. Sorry it took so long, but here it is.

Misconception #1 - "All real estate agents are equal."

Absolutely not. Some are there to sell. That's their main focus. They are after numbers, and they are there to solely get you on paper. Typically the ones that work hard for you are the ones that work by referral.

The exceptional REALTOR® will provide you with the "I've got your back" kind of care - meaning they really look after a client's best interests, even if it means walking away from a deal and going on to another one.

This type of REALTOR® will also take the time to listen to their client's needs and wants. Imagine telling your agent you need a bungalow because stairs are a problem, and they keep showing you 2-storey houses. It's more common than you think and one reason why not all REALTORS® are created equal.

One last point. Not all real estate agents are REALTORs®. Only real estate professionals who are members of their local real estate board and of CREA (The Canadian Real Estate Association), and subscribe to the ethical standards of the REALTOR® Code, are allowed to call themselves REALTORS®.

CREA is one of Canada's largest single-industry trade associations, representing more than 100,000 real estate Brokers/agents and salespeople working through more than 100 real estate Boards and Associations.

Registrants in any province who become members of organized real estate have an obligation to act in accordance with the REALTOR® Code. This Code outlines the accepted standard of conduct for all real estate practitioners who are members of a real estate Board or a Provincial Association.

CREA owns the MLS® and REALTOR® trademarks, which signify a high standard of service and identify members of CREA.
