If you’re the kind of person who finds themselves spending
lots of time in off leash areas or packing a furry, four legged friend around Strathcona County it’s that time of year to renew
their license. Pet licensing in the area
is mandatory and the license year runs from April 1 – March 31.
- Cats do not require licensing in Strathcona County
- New dogs must be licensed within 15 days of acquiring
- If you no longer have a dog that was previously licensed it is important that you notify the county this
- The first license for a spayed or neutered dog or a dog less than 6 months of age is free
- If you have more than 2 dogs and are acquiring a 3rd, you will need to apply for an “over limit” permit as well

Please keep in mind that Edmonton bylaws are very different. If you are a YEG resident, you need the
following information:
- In Edmonton, both cats and dogs must be licensed. The fee for an unlicensed one is $250
- Licenses expire 1 year from date of issue
- Puppies and kittens less than 6 months do not require a license
- You must be 18 or older to license a pet
- Maximum number of pets allowed are 6 cats and 3 dogs
- Licenses are not transferable
- Indoor pets also require a license
- Fees are posted on the website
