School and Playground Zones....What ARE the rules???

If it took you a few extra minutes to get to work this morning, or you were one of the lucky parents caught in the madness of the school hour rush this morning, then you probably don’t need the cool weather to remind you it’s September 4th. Yes, the kids are back in school in most areas as of today, which means you need to pay extra attention to the school zones in your area. Ever wonder the actual rules of a school zone? What time does it apply? On weekends too? Believe it or not, many drivers aren’t sure. Here are the laws of the road according to the Government of Alberta Ministry of Transportation:

• A school Zone sign:

The school zone speed limit of 30 km/hr is in effect between the following hours (unless otherwise posted):
- ON school days ONLY
- 8:00 am – 9:30 am
- 11:30 am to 1:30 pm
- 3:00 pm to 4:30 pm

• A Playground Zone sign:

The playground zone rules are as follows:
- Speed limit is 30 km/hr unless otherwise posted while zone is in effect
- Playground restrictions are in effect from 8:30 am until 1 hour after sunset
- You are not permitted to pass or attempt to pass another vehicle travelling the same direction while the zone is in effect

Drive safely and always pay attention to crosswalks and road signs, especially now that school is back in. Days are a lot more enjoyable when everyone arrives home safely.
