Pet Licensing

Majority of families have some sort of pet, and whether you have had your 4 legged friend for a while, or have a new pet joining the family, you need to be aware of local pet licensing bylaws.

Edmonton:
• ALL cats and dogs over 6 months old must be licensed.
• The fine for an unlicensed animal is $250
• Licenses are available in person, by fax, mail or even online for convenience.
• Keep in mind it is more money to license a non spayed/neutered animal.
• Cats must always wear either a collar tag or their microchip/tattoo. A dog must always wear collar tags.
• The max # pets per residence is 6 cats and 3 dogs.

Strathcona County:
• The license year runs from April 1- March 31
• All dogs must be licensed, and it must be done within 15 days of acquiring the dog.
• Each new owner of a spayed/neutered dog receives the 1st year of licensing free.
• Dogs less than 6 months may be licensed for free for the year.
• Guide dog licensing is free.
• If a dog is deemed “vicious” by Strathcona County, the fee is $750 yearly.
• Dogs must always wear their tags.

These bylaws are in effect to not only help you locate and recover a lost pet, but to provide food, shelter and care for lost pets, as well as adoption for unclaimed animals. Tags make it much easier to locate owners and reunite them with their families, so please take the proper steps in ensuring the safety of your fuzzy friends.
