A Final Touch of Winter Moisture

Hope you all had a fabulous Family Day weekend! And while the long weekend probably brought dinners, family and adventure, it also brought a touch of SNOW.
We have been very fortunate in escaping Winter’s usual wrath of minus 40 temperatures and footfalls of the white stuff, however, the recent bit of snow can actually be put to good use.
With the warm temperatures and lack of moisture, the snow is a great way to keep your vegatation from suffering. Shoveling a bit of the snow around the base of your trees and shrubs and on top of your main planting areas will provide them with much needed moisture, and root protection. And when it comes to trees, it’s not so much the roots that suffer, as the bark. If you haven’t added casing around the bottoms of trees, watch for animals such as rabbits (or deer in the more rural areas) who love to nibble at the bark, stripping it away.
Landscaping is a beautiful compliment to any home, but is expensive and a lot of work to plant and maintain. While we are thoroughly enjoying this abnormally warm Winter season, it’s also important to understand the effects it has on our investments. A little preparation goes a long way and can save a lot of energy and money come Spring…..which is right around the corner!!!
