The Art of Buying Art

We all know what it is like to walk into a room that has a perfect piece of Art. It stands out in luminous glory and we cannot help but stare. It’s the reason galleries and artists are simply such fabulous places to visit and admire. However, types of art are as various as our tastes. While you may be drawn to that smaller contemporary painting, your partner is drawn to the overly large realism piece on the opposite wall. You simply cannot fathom a painting of an animal above the couch, while they are smitten by the lurking jaguar or that signed jersey that’s been hung with the care of a stocking at Christmas.
Whether you have recently moved into a new home, are renovating a room or simply looking for a piece of art to fill a spot on the wall, the options are endless. Making some basic decisions as to what you are looking for can greatly increase your chances of a successful purchase.

• Price Point: What is your budget for the piece? This will help determine whether you head to the local home store or a reputable gallery.
• Size: Measure the space before you even leave the house. If the work is going above a bed or couch make sure it is not longer or larger than the furniture.
• Style: The style will need to reflect the style of your home or the room. Is your style contemporary or traditional? Will an abstract piece be most fitting?
• Color: Don’t try match your art to your wall paint. Look for a piece that picks up accent colors in your area rug, throw pillows or upholstery.
• Seek out reputable and professional advice: Shopping for Art is like anything else, you CAN comparison shop between galleries.
• Research: Before committing to the piece, research the artists and the piece itself. Know who you are buying from and ensure you are getting what you are paying for.

Art can be an overwhelming purchase, but finding that perfect piece will change the way you view your room and you will find yourself admiring it years down the road. And you can always head back for the jersey piece....for his man cave in the basement....next time.
