Fall
is officially knocking on the door. It seems to arrive overnight in
Alberta as leaves change and the air cools. We mow the grass less,
transplant perennials, drain pools, clean out holiday trailers and make a
plan to finally hang the bikes in the garage. Parents fill out endless
forms, drain accounts paying fees and wave to backpacks heading onto
the bus as kids head back for another year of learning. We make the
switch to a new season and the hectic pace it brings in comparison to
those lazy days of summer. We are up earlier, packing lunches, packing
extra curricular bags, checking agendas, throwing meals in the crockpot
and trying to get everyone out the door on time. Life is busy and fall
is full speed ahead. Surely it was easier in “the good old days”?
Well I’m not so sure about easier, but it’s definitely a different world
nowadays.
Let’s look at 10 ways school has changed from just a few decades ago to school of this generation:
1. Then: We sweet talked the secretary or bugged our friends for a quarter and used the payphone to call our parents. We called for emergency cases only or to ask if we could go over to our friends.
Now: Kids carry their own cell phones in their backpacks and text everyone but their own parents.
2. Then: If we needed information, we flipped through our textbook or went to the library. We may even have finally gotten use out of those unbelievably expensive encyclopedias that our parents bought from the door to door guy.
Now: Google and Wikipedia….kid argument #27 for their own phone.
3. Then: The chalkboard. Copying notes as the teacher did, and crossing our fingers to be the lucky one who got to leave early to smack the dust out.
Now: The magic of the smartboard.
4. Then: Pages and pages of hand written work to hand in; original copies, edited copies and final drafts. Having writers cramp was practically a school sport.
Now: Writers cramp has been replaced by carpal tunnel. The kids have virtual classroom storage to store documents, make changes and hand in assignments without even being in the classroom.
5. Then: Parents were actually able to help with homework.
Now: Skip counting, 10 blocks and step math…..enough said.
6. Then: Passing notes, telling fortunes and signing year books.
Now: What? I missed that….I was too busy texting….
7. Then: We lived on PB&J and baloney & mustard sandwiches….and koolaid.
Now: Nut free, Refined Sugar Free, BPA Free, Gluten Free, Crust Free, Vegan, Organic, cookie cutter shaped with shredded carrot whisker sandwiches.
8. Then: One first day of school outfit.
Now: Half the mall, dress boots, dress shoes, gym shoes, outdoor shoes and a melted credit card.
9. Then: Back to school photos that were cut neatly into individuals and passed out to our favourite people with our name and year on the back. 8x10’s of each year hung neatly in a row in the hallway.
Now: 45 minutes and 87 cell phone shots later we have the perfect social media update that we share globally before first bell, because our kids are seriously the cutest...and they are actually clean today.
10. Then: After school sports like volleyball, badminton and track….that were once a week and free. A highlight was riding the yellow school bus to a neighboring town for a game.
Now: Picking the kids up early to get to seven kinds of dance, three kinds of music, hockey, soccer, swimming, horseback riding, rock climbing, football, cheer, gymnastics, karate and art class….and that’s Monday…..
As with everything there are good points for both generations, but what we can agree on is that life is hectic. Thinking of buying or selling can feel like an overwhelming undertaking, but that’s where we come in.
Our team of professionals will walk you thru each and every step. We take pride in knowing the most current market information, meaning we are able to provide you with a complimentary market analysis and the tools to make an informed decision that is best for your needs. If you know someone who is thinking of buying or selling, we always appreciate referrals.
